The Wyllieum Access Statement
The Wyllieum aims to be an accessible venue, we want all visits to be enjoyable and equal for all. We understand disability as a Social Model, we take this to mean that it is our responsibility as an organisation to limit how disabling our galleries and spaces can be, and we are committed to making The Wyllieum accessible to all.
From this starting point, we understand that access is not a goal that we can achieve rather something that takes consistent work, a process where The Wyllieum works continuously to adapt and develop our programmes and practices for them to become fully accessible.
We welcome comments from visitors about access as it is through healthy dialogue that we can learn and improve our offer. If you would like to speak to the team about access, please email questions@wyllieum.com
Physical Access
There is level access to The Wyllieum’s main entrance via the car park on Custom House Way. During opening hours, access to The Wyllieum can be made through external electric double doors and a large internal wooden door which is kept open during our opening hours. All our galleries have level access with paths and routes through the building kept clear at all times. The mezzanine floor and learning studio can be reached via a lift.
Toilets
There is an accessible toilet located in the foyer to The Ocean Terminal, approximately 30m from The Wyllieum. From the galleries, this can be accessed without steps or exiting the building. There is clear signage from The Wyllieum to the Ocean Terminal’s facilities. There are additional toilet blocks for men and women, and a separate baby changing area. Sanitary products are available free of charge from the women’s toilets.
Seating and rest areas
There are multiple points around The Wyllieum where visitors can access seating. Each gallery has fold our seats which visitors are welcome to borrow during their visit. We can also provide backed chairs for visitors that require it, just ask a member of the team.
Accessibility
Guide dogs and assistance animals are welcome on site, water bowls are available from the front desk. Tea, coffee, and water are also available to visitors free of charge, just ask a team member.
Lights Up Relaxed Viewing
We can operate a lights up relaxed viewing of both our temporary exhibitions and collection display, lights can be set to be brighter and spaces open specifically for visitors with autism, Tourette’s or anyone else who might benefit from a relaxed attitude towards movement and noise making. Amendments to sound and flashing lights will also be made. Please ask a team member for assistance.
Let us know if there is anything more we can be doing to make The Wyllieum more accessible. We are always interested to learn what we could be doing to improve our offer!
