The Wyllieum is grateful to host George Wyllie’s written archive and personal library in our dedicated archive room, this is currently being assessed by our in house archivist Pinja Kaivola with the support and encouragement of the George Wyllie Estate’s curator Lynne Mackenzie.
This archive, which the George Wyllie Estate is generously allowing us to be custodian of, will provide essential context into George’s artistic process and thinking, and will be of interest to researchers, students, and other visitors seeking to learn more about George, or art in general.
The archive holds a plethora of material where George’s own artistic process can be tracked - through sketches, maquettes and correspondence - and a trove of pictures, video- and audio tapes which hold demonstrations of finished pieces of art.
George’s personal library includes an impressive collection of art books on theory, movements, individual artists and world art, as well as poetry and prose where his interests become more evident.
Following George’s lead, The Wyllieum seeks to educate and foster a creative environment for the wellbeing of our local community. We intend to utilise the archive as a resource for learning and look forward to opening the archive for academic study and requests for tours of this unique collection.
